In fact, the Ceylon tea industry celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2017 and there has never been a better time to learn about this fascinating industry. Planted first by Scottish planter James Taylor during the time of British rule in Sri Lanka, tea has become an iconic part of Sri Lankan heritage. Join the founder of Sri Lanka’s first designer tea brand to learn more about the history, culture and customs of tea making. This is a tea tasting masterclass and you’ll be lead by an expert!
You will meet your host in the tea room at Bayleaf Restaurant. The conversation and tea sampling will take you through the processes of Ceylon tea’s journey: from the producer to the buyers at Colombo’s famed Tea Auction, right down to the sippers of this ancient beverage. Your host will touch on the varieties of teas produced from different estates (there are hundreds of registered tea factories in Sri Lanka, grouped broadly under high, medium and low grown, depending on the factory elevation). Throughout the discussion of manufacture and various styles, you’ll taste a combination of many teas, including black, green, white and herbal Teas. Your host will also show you the art of pouring the perfect cup of tea. Finish up with a slice of cake and a few extra nibbles alongside your favorite blend of tea.
