High tea at the Galle Face HotelBack
There are few hotels in the world with a history as long as that of the Galle Face Hotel. Colombo’s most iconic building, the hotel dates back to 1864 and was one of Asia’s first Grand Hotels. With a prime location in front of the harbour, in earlier days the Galle Face Hotel was the first building seen by visitors arriving by boat to the island and serves as a piece of living history within the capital. Offering timeless luxury that reflects the colonial nature of Colombo’s past, the hotel’s grand halls and breezy verandas have served as a popular spot to enjoy a cup of Ceylon tea or a cocktail since the hotel’s inception. Settle down to an extensive collection of loose leaf tea, cakes, sandwiches, pastries and scones in a quintessentially Colonial setting overlooking the Indian Ocean in what was once one of Asia’s finest hotels.
You will be seated in the open air restaurant overlooking the ocean and waiters will bring over a selection of food to your table on three tiered plates. The assortment will include classics such as cucumber sandwiches, scones with jam and cream and battenburg cake alongside some local specialties. This will all come served with a side of iced coffee and a wide selection of loose leaf Ceylon teas. Feel free to stay as long as you want. The gentle breeze coming in from the ocean makes this a very pleasant place to while away the afternoon hours.
