Celebrate Sri LankaBack
As an island that’s home to a multitude of cultures, Sri Lanka is rich in diversity and brimming with traditions which have stemmed from people and places all over the world. Although predominantly Buddhist, it observes numerous religious festivals and the island is home to Muslims, Christians and Hindus too, evidenced by the mosques, churches and kovils that sit alongside Buddhist shrines. The most famous religious festival in Sri Lanka is the Esala Perahera in Kandy, an annual procession held in celebration of the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha which has been enshrined on the island for over a thousand years. Visit Sri Lanka in late July or August to witness the astonishing Kandy Perahera, a dramatic display of traditional dance and music complete with elephants parading through the streets, dressed in glittering finery. A number of smaller peraheras are held at temples across the island throughout the year, or you can journey to Kataragama during the annual pilgrimage. Vesak is also celebrated each year in May, a spectacular festival where Sri Lanka is illuminated with thousands of lights. See our range of tours below which allow you to experience Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage and the incredible festivals held in the island throughout the year to celebrate this.
