A professional teacher will take you through the basics of traditional drums, their uses in Sri Lankan culture and their place in history. Be familiarized with various types of drums, understand their differences, try your hand at playing them and even try on the drummer’s traditional headdress.
Experience Overview
The teacher lives less than 20 mins from Kandy town and is a descendant of a long line of traditional drummers. Drums have a long and distinct place in the history and culture of Sri Lanka. There are various drum types and styles of playing, depending on the occasion and this experience will allow you to try out different styles. Well-suited for children as it lets them experiment with different drums. The host will help with translations if you’d like to speak to the teacher at length over a cup of tea. The traditional headdress is wound from a long length of cloth, a complicated but beautiful process the teacher will help you with, so be sure to take your camera along for pictures.
