Horathapola

Negombo

Horathapola, a family-owned mansion dating back to the 1920s lies tucked within a vast green coconut belt that stretches up the west coast from Negombo to Puttalam and inland to Kurunegala. Its relative proximity to Colombo International Airport makes it a perfect base for those who want to unwind, slow down and recover after a long flight, or a place to relax before leaving, although Horathapola is well worth at least two nights. The estate is also located en route to the Cultural Triangle.

The main house which is elegantly furnished, lies within a 50 acre coconut plantation. Coconut, rice, cashew nuts, mangoes and other fruits, as well as spices and hardwood trees are all grown on the estate.

An elegant hall greets you upon entrance with beautiful terracotta floors, ceiling beams and furnished with simple, stylish antiques. There is an extensive library and plenty of hidden nooks for those wanting to read a good book or relax in peace and tranquility.

Public areas of the resort – a first-floor restaurant, fully-equipped bar and reception area – are all located in the main house, a 150-year-old fully-restored mansion once home to the village chieftain. Linking all areas of the resort is an eco-friendly transport system through on-call golf buggies and pedal bicycles, two of which are provided for guests in each chalet. With an emphasis on sustainability, Ulagalla operates on a solar energy farm that powers half of the energy requirements and their chalets are built using recyclable material.

The activities offered at Ulagalla – archery, horse riding, kayaking and nature walks – have also been chosen for their minimal impact on the environment.

Ceylon Tea Trails - Norwood

Hatton

Welcome to Ceylon Tea Trails, a range of luxurious planters’ bungalows in Dickoya, found approximately 4,000 feet above sea level in the southern highlands of Sri Lanka’s tea country. Tea Trails comprises five classic colonial bungalows, all of which are Relais & Châteaux bungalowsbuilt for British tea estate managers in the days of the Raj. Each bungalow is different, combining both classical and contemporary styles: the effect is quintessentially luxurious and colonial, a stroll back in time but entirely resplendent in modern amenities. Within the confines of each bungalow guests will find over-sized rooms with four-poster beds, lavish bathrooms and a blazing log fire in the dining and drawing rooms. The meticulously maintained gardens also feature sun-decks and summer houses where traditional English Cream Teas are served by the bungalow’s resident butler. Enjoy reading by the pool, having high tea in the summerhouse or a gin and tonic on the terrace.

The Norwood bungalow, built in 1890 and rebuilt in 1940, is located 4,300ft above sea level and sits at the eastern end of the Bogawantalawa Valley, high-up above Castlereagh Lake. It’s set in a beautiful garden with towering bamboo plants, manicured croquet lawns and a stunning pool. Like all the Tea Trails bungalows, Norwood is intimate with only five large suites. The interior décor is comfortable and airy whilst retaining a traditional feel with unique pieces of colonial architecture.

Wild Coast Tented Lodge - Sri Lanka In Style

Wild Coast Tented Lodge

Yala National Park

The spa will be closed from Oct 5th – Nov 30th, during this period, in-room treatments can be arranged and the full spa menu will be available.

Sprawled across the island’s Deep South bordering the buffer zone of Yala National Park – which boasts the highest density of Sri Lankan leopard in the world – Wild Coast Tented Lodge is the newest addition to Resplendent Ceylon’s collection of high-end hotels. Designed by a group of Dutch, English and Sri Lankan architects, the campsite is inspired by the natural colors and shapes found in the area.

This Relais & Châteaux resort has 36 uniquely-designed tents scattered across the area with jungle views and some are situated close to watering holes often visited by wildlife. The restaurant, a highlight in terms of design, has a pool which winds its way through the dining area, bar and a small enclosed library which affords stunning views of the secluded beach stretch. Although accessible, the beach is too rough for swimming and guests need to be aware that there is the possibility of wild animals entering the resort on occasion as it is on the buffer zone of the park. The hotel has a list of  comprehensive safety guidelines in place which guests can request to ensure their safety as well as that of the animals.

The tents at Wild Coast Tented Lodge are referred to as Cocoons and Urchins and are well-appointed with air-conditioning, Wi-Fi and minibar facilities.

  • Enjoy spectacular aerial views of the central highlands

Amanwella - Sri Lanka In Style

Amanwella

Tangalle

Nestled within a secluded crescent-shaped bay, Amanwella is the ultimate beach hotel. Inspired by the architectural designs of Geoffrey Bawa, the resort easily blends in with the surrounding landscape.

Sun loungers laze under the swaying palms just a whisper from the waves. Read, relax, run or take a stroll to the rocky headlands at either end of the bay. Swimming is safe in-season at the southern end of the bay, although the best place for a dip is the serene infinity- edged swimming pool. Keep an eye out for the blowhole that sporadically sprouts water in the far-away distance.

The 30 suites are split into two categories and are located on the hillside, connected by little pathways that lead down to the sandy beach.

Activities during your stay

  • Bask in the glorious sun as you relax by the beach
Day 13 to 15
Kahanda Kanda
Galle
Kahanda Kanda - Sri Lanka In Style

Kahanda Kanda

Galle

Kahanda Kanda vividly translates as Yellow Moon Mountain. Also known as KK, this ethnically stylish private villa is perched on a ridge overlooking Koggala Lake surrounded by 12 acres of a working pea-green tea estate and verdant jungle. It also has a beautiful moss-green cement infinity swimming pool with cascading water feature at the far end. A striking saffron-yellow wall with framed windows runs 80m through the length of the property and divides the panorama of views between those of Koggala Lake, and those of the tea and jungle.

While Galle and its sights are only 15km away and the nearest beaches a fifteen-minute drive, KK is close enough to all of the area’s major attractions and provides a gorgeously dreamy place to come back to at the end of the day if you even care to venture out of its Zen-like embrace.
