Explore the intricate murals and statues at Dambulla

Experiences in Dambulla

Back Back

Dambulla is home to one of the most popular cultural sites in Sri Lanka – the island’s largest and most spectacular cave temple complex which is decorated by the finest murals in the country, brilliant multi-coloured images which depict ancient stories and the life of the Buddha. Dambulla Cave Temple also houses beautiful carvings and stupas and stupendous statues, including an awe-inspiring recumbent figure of Lord Buddha which stretches the length of the cave.

There are also a range of other things to do in this area if you want to venture out a little further. Climb nearby Sigiriya Rock Fortress, one of the most awe-inspiring sites in Sri Lanka; explore Ritigala Forest Reserve in search of an ancient Buddhist monastery which was abandoned over 1,000 years ago; go on a jeep safari in Minneriya National Park in search of Sri Lanka’s ‘big game’, including elephants and leopards, or experience an authentic Sri Lanka by visiting a local village and dining with the community.

For something extra special, take a hot air balloon ride at sunrise over the dramatic plains of the Cultural Triangle and watch the beautiful landscape, dotted with ancient ruins, unfold beneath you. A must for honeymooners.
