Bawa’s Lunuganga Gardens

Back Back

This morning you will be introduced to the life and times of the late Geoffrey Bawa, one of Sri Lanka’s most renowned architects. Your guide for the day will be a staff member of Lunuganga who will guide you through the beautiful tropical modernist countryside home of Bawa.

Experience Overview

Geoffrey Bawa is Sri Lanka’s most prolific and influential architect. His work has had a tremendous impact upon architecture throughout Asia and is unanimously acclaimed by connoisseurs of architecture worldwide. Every turn and every bend in Bawa’s country home is an interesting experience – with so many exotic plants and trees and views to take in throughout the distinct homes and garden. The house itself is sparse but beautiful, full of impressive paintings and photographs of a bygone age. You have the option of sitting down to have some tea and biscuits.

What to wear or bring along:

Cool, light clothing. We’d recommend wearing a pair of trainers as some sections of the lawn tend to be muddy. You might also like to bring an umbrella along in case it rains or to protect yourself from the sun.

Lunuganga is a functioning commercial hotel and therefore, all outside visitors are expected to respect the personal spaces and privacy of in-house guests. Some guests have regretted not being able to enter the hotel as such and take pictures inside the house.

Managing Expectations

It is important to remember that, whilst they are experts in their field, the people who run or host our experiences are not necessarily used to working in the tourism industry and may not offer the level of service you would find at a five-star hotel. For example, instead of a formal lecture, you may get a relaxed conversation where open discussion is encouraged. All of our hosts are, however, extremely engaging, knowledgeable and passionate about educating visitors about their chosen subject and we have worked with them to ensure that they deliver worthwhile, fulfilling experiences. We welcome feedback, so please let us know what you thought and if you think any improvements could be made to the experiences we offer.
