Whale and dolphin watching by private catamaran

Back Back

Sri Lanka may well be one of the best places in the world to see blue whales. The island enjoys a unique position in the Indian Ocean, with the shoreline lying unusually close to the continental shelf, the deep point at which larger marine life is able to thrive whilst still feeding off the nutrients that flow from shore. This means that the deep-waters that provide a habitat for whales can be easily reached by boat, and conditions for whales – particularly sperm and blue whales – are excellent. During the whale-watching season there is almost a 90% guarantee of seeing whales. Spend a morning on a beautiful private luxury catamaran to spot dolphins and whales out at sea.

Experience Overview

Set out at 6.30am for the best whale-watching conditions and the calmest oceans. Boarding the boat at Mirissa, you will set sails for the Indian Ocean on a stunning and modern catamaran complete with a professional crew, all safety equipment and a well-equipped kitchen where the chef will whip you up a delicious full breakfast and a three course lunch. As soon as the guide spots whales, you’ll be invited up to the top deck or front of the boat to get the best views of the whales. After the whale-watching you’ll head back towards shore, anchoring on the way for the chance to jump into the water and try some stand up paddle boarding or snorkeling. Finally at around midday, the chef will serve up a mid-day snack to eat on board as you sail back.

Managing Expectations

It is important to remember that, whilst they are experts in their field, the people who run or host our experiences are not necessarily used to working in the tourism industry and may not offer the level of service you would find at a five-star hotel. For example, instead of a formal lecture, you may get a relaxed conversation where open discussion is encouraged. All of our hosts are, however, extremely engaging, knowledgeable and passionate about educating visitors about their chosen subject and we have worked with them to ensure that they deliver worthwhile, fulfilling experiences. We welcome feedback, so please let us know what you thought and if you think any improvements could be made to the experiences we offer.
