A journey across the Mahaweli
BackAt a length of 330km, Mahaweli is Sri Lanka’s longest river spanning across one fifth of the total area of the island and reaches the Bay of Bengal through the Trincomalee Bay in the eastern coastline. The river serves as a lifeline to several hundred thousand families and is connected to the hearts of all Sri Lankans in one way or the other. Kayaking across the Mahaweli and camping along the river bank gives you the chance to discover and enjoy Sri Lanka from a unique viewpoint.
Experience Overview
Start your four day journey at the base camp in Kithulaga, where you will stay the first night and learn how to read the river, safety and paddling techniques on the Kelani River. Rise early on the second day and make your way across the Mahaweli. Over the next few days, you will be surrounded by wilderness and birdlife and pass through some of Sri Lanka’s most secluded areas as well as a national park. At dusk, set up a camp fire to ward off any wild animals and gather around to listen to the day’s events as you enjoy dinner under the stars.
