A round of golf in Nuwara Eliya

Back Back

The quaint hill station town of Nuwara Eliya is often described in Sri Lanka as ‘Little England.’ With temperatures ranging between 10 and 20 degrees, Nuwara Eliya’s temperate climate lends it the feeling of permanently being in spring. Carpeted in flowers and usually cloaked in thick sleepy mists, the town was a favorite resort for tea planters during British Colonial rule. Modern day Nuwara Eliya has a slightly more Sri Lankan feel to it with its bustling markets and erratic tuk tuk traffic, but the town still clings strongly to its colonial history. The Brits, enthusiastic sportsmen, didn’t waste any time in introducing sporting clubs to Nuwara Eliya. Within the sprawl of tea planter’s bungalows, white picket fences, strawberry patches and neatly tended hedgerows is the Nuwara Eliya golf club, impossible to miss because it is slap bang in the center of town. Over 125 years old, this quirky golf course hasn’t changed a bit since its inception and it simply oozes olde worlde charm. Dating back to the 19th Century, the golf club is one of the oldest in South Asia.

Experience Overview

Start off in the golf club, which has been running for over a century with few changes to the layout and décor. It’s worth taking the time to explore the club to see the names of the old club members up on the wall in the wood-lined and well-stocked bar. Equipment is available to rent in the club shop and the staff will help you get kitted out. The usual golf attire is required for entry onto the course and you will need to be dressed appropriately to play. Once you have been assigned a caddie, you are ready to begin. The course is 18 holes in total and the caddies offer a great deal of knowledge and insight into the course. Nuwara Eliya can be quite misty in the winter months, making play quite a challenge so it is generally better to play in the summer months. Perhaps a more exciting challenge is the fact that the golf course weaves its way through the city, with a main road actually running though the course itself, making play very interesting. The road, however, does little to detract from the natural beauty of the golf course with its neatly tended lawns and bunkers bordered by fir trees. It’s a truly beautiful place to spend the day.

Managing Expectations

It is important to remember that, whilst they are experts in their field, the people who run or host our experiences are not necessarily used to working in the tourism industry and may not offer the level of service you would find at a five-star hotel. For example, instead of a formal lecture, you may get a relaxed conversation where open discussion is encouraged. All of our hosts are, however, extremely engaging, knowledgeable and passionate about educating visitors about their chosen subject and we have worked with them to ensure that they deliver worthwhile, fulfilling experiences. We welcome feedback, so please let us know what you thought and if you think any improvements could be made to the experiences we offer.
