A visit to a modern-day tea factory
BackScattered across Sri Lanka, tea has been a part of Sri Lanka’s history for the past 150 years. Although relatively young compared to its 5000 year old history in china, Ceylon Tea is a world-renowned brand that many have come to differentiate by its taste, aroma and overall high standard. Varieties of tea are distinguished by the elevation and the climate they are grown in. Low country tea is found in Galle and the southern region, mid country tea is sourced from Ella and Kandy and the central highlands in Hatton and Nuwara Eliya produces a light tea that is considered one of the finest in the world.
Experience Overview
Start your journey through the tea production by meeting your host early morning or late afternoon when it’s not too hot at a lesser-known tea factory just outside of Galle and walk amidst this scenic low country tea plantation. Your host will guide you through the meticulously lined tea bushes and explain the history of tea and its pickers in Sri Lanka. During the walk, your host will introduce you to indigenous plants and wildlife that you may come across, from peacocks to local almonds and lemongrass, so make sure to keep an eye out for anything you might find interesting. Afterwards, continue downhill to the modern tea factory, which uses the latest technology to produce Sri Lanka’s finest tea closely watched by ladies dressed in pinafores and caps who ensure that standards are maintained throughout the process.
