Experience Overview
Start your journey to the Karikadduwan Jetty at 6.45am from Jaffna to get on board the public ferry at 7.50am. Watch the milky foam as the ferry cuts through the emerald tinted waters of the Indian Ocean. Hop off the ferry and set your foot on the little island that is dotted with simple earthen homes surrounded by coral walls. The growing rock is hard to be missed as it takes the shape of a serpent, and people have wrapped it with bright shawls. Also, catch a glimpse of the towering Baobab tree, which is said to be introduced by Arabic traders from far-off lands. The remnants of the Old Dutch Fort that have stood the test of the time, are a reflection of Sri Lanka’s colonial epoch. Get stunned by the wild horses of the island that roam wildly with their manes rippling in the wind. Wrap up your island adventure savoring a simple local lunch with your host. The boat used to reach Delft Island is a public ferry, operated by the Sri Lankan government. Whilst we are assured of its safety, the ferry does not have particularly comfortable seating and it can get quite humid when you are on board. Passengers on the ferry can be loud, but this is all part of the experience of traveling on a local ferry. The journey will take 45 minutes each way. Please do mind your step when you get in and out of the ferry. Very occasionally there are too many people waiting for the ferry and you may have to wait for the next one which departs approximately one hour later.
