A walk through the Sri Lankan garden – Matale

Back Back

The Sri Lankan garden is a working spice and fruit farm, nestled in a rural village in Matale. The farm has a variety of spices, vegetables, fruits and herbs, along with some great views of the Aluvihare mountains. Set on the upper half of the mountain on fifteen and a half acres, the garden is filled with Pepper, Nutmeg, Cocoa, Coffee, Papaya, Jackfruit, Passion fruit, Grapefruit, Lemon, Lime, Mango, Banana, Coconut, Rubber, Teak and Mahogany.

Experience Overview

At the farm you will be greeted by the planter with fresh juice sourced from the farm. Go on an easy hike around the farm with the planter to learn about the crops and trees for around 45 minutes. After the informative hike, enjoy a delicious, traditional home cooked rice and curry lunch, prepared with fresh herbs and vegetables sourced mainly from the plantation. The planter will join you for lunch and share his knowledge on the exotic vegetables and herbs. He may also teach you the local-style of consuming rice and curry, if you are up for the challenge! Our German planter has lived in Matale for the last four decades. During his time in Sri Lanka, he has worked with the Sri Lankan Army and acted in a couple of Sinhalese movies. He has a wide knowledge of the crops and livestock, and is well versed with the geography and agricultural nuances of the Matale area.

Managing Expectations

It is important to remember that, whilst they are experts in their field, the people who run or host our experiences are not necessarily used to working in the tourism industry and may not offer the level of service you would find at a five-star hotel. For example, instead of a formal lecture, you may get a relaxed conversation where open discussion is encouraged. All of our hosts are, however, extremely engaging, knowledgeable and passionate about educating visitors about their chosen subject and we have worked with them to ensure that they deliver worthwhile, fulfilling experiences. We welcome feedback, so please let us know what you thought and if you think any improvements could be made to the experiences we offer.
