Colombo’s street-eats
BackNo matter which part of the world it is, food plays a pivotal role in society, and Colombo is no exception. As a place where diverse cultures melt into each other, cuisine brings communities together and is a celebration of the city’s multiculturalism. Colombo also has a rich history influenced by various civilisations from around the world, including the Portuguese, Dutch and British. Each brought with them their own culinary traditions which have shaped traditional Sri Lankan cuisine. The streets of Colombo are vibrant with the food and lifestyles that have been moulded by each other through generations and an evening of adventure is never too far away.
Experience Overview
Meet outside a bar in the bustling heart of Colombo at sundown and start with a shot of local alcoholic firepower mixed into an authentic brew. Having set the feel for the walk, head out to New Bazaar Street, lined with compact houses, to witness the circumstances which brought about the birth of street food in Sri Lanka. Stop by a cart by the side of the road to sample and learn about an array of classic local tea time accompaniments, both sweet and savory. Next head to a feast of flat breads and curries ranging from cuttlefish and beef to delicacies such as tongue or brain – a gentle reminder to always stay adventurous. Just a few steps away, get your first taste of sweet beeda, a curious concoction which originated in Bombay, and then hop onto tuk tuks to make your way to the final stop. En route, make a quick stop to slurp up a hot cup of local porridge and continue to Galle Face Green to sit down to your day’s dinner of Sri Lankan cult food – koththu.
