Depths of Jaffna
BackAn exuberant fusion of culture, chronicles of history and spiritualism, Jaffna is a fascinating destination to be explored. The vibrancy of the northern peninsula is further enhanced by the bright-hued facades of Kovils, stately edifices of colonial remnants and thriving local markets. A walk through the town is like taking on a quest to witness Jaffna’s distinctive identity.
Experience Overview
Start your Jaffna expedition by visiting the Chunnakam market, which is a whirlwind of colors and intense aromas beckoning the numerous shoppers that swamped to the market. Pile upon pile of vegetables, greens and fruits, the Chunnakam market is known for its fresh produce. The market is a one-stop shop for many household needs: sacks of local spices, vibrant colored textiles, traditional cooking utensils and handicraft items made from different parts of the Palmyrah tree. Next, explore the ancient Naguleswaram Temple in Keerimalai, which traces its roots back to the 7th century. Though the Kovil was destroyed by the colonizers of the island, it was rebuilt and what can be seen today is a colorful structure that dominates the landscape of the area. The compounds of the Kovil are embellished with traditional murals and statues of the divinity. The Raja Gopuram of the Kovil is 117 feet with nine storeys. The Kovil is also one of the five ancient Shiva temples in the country. The famed Keerimalai pool of spring water is also located in the premises of the temple. Mark the end of your temple exploration by visiting this natural pond, which is believed to contain medicinal properties in its water.
