Kandy Victoria Golf
BackNamed after the Victoria Dam built in the 1800s by the British, this magical pocket of dry zone hemmed in by the Knuckles Mountains and the misty Dumbara Valley is stunning and unexpected. The Kandy road branches off at Digana where jungle abruptly gives way to a totally different landscape. There is nowhere else on the island where you will meet Jersey cattle grazing an up-country pasture on one side of the road with coconut palms swaying on the other. Just past the Saddle Club, outside of which ponies graze, is the heart of the 500 acre haven The Victoria Golf & Country Club, voted one of the `Most Beautiful Courses in the World’ by Golf Digest. Surrounded by unsurpassable views, this is a tropical golfer’s paradise.
Experience Overview
There are 18 holes in total, spread out over a 500 acre estate which can only be described as breathtaking. It goes without saying that a golf buggy is required to get around the course and the interchangeable terrain makes this rather interesting. Each hole also offers different challenges, but the par 4 sixth hole has become the club’s signature. Looking out over the Dumbara Valley, the elevation of this hole allows for stunning views over the reservoir. A slight breeze from the valley also offers some unexpected challenges to a tee shot. For those who are not so keen to join in for golf, Victoria is a beautifully tranquil environment in which to relax. There’s a fantastic restaurant, a floodlit tennis court, a riding school offering horse safaris and riding lessons for children and adults alike, and a large outdoor infinity pool. This is also a bird watchers’ paradise with eagles and 70 varieties of bird, three varieties of deer and prolific wildlife.
