BackSet on the terrace overlooking the beautiful gardens of a century old manor originally belonging to a renowned surgeon in Sri Lanka in the early 1900s, ‘Tastes and tales of Jaffna’ is a unique culinary experience. Drawing on stories and flavors from the family tree of the owners, dinner here hopes to give guests an insight into the traditions and rich food culture which is deeply rooted in the heart of the northern district of Jaffna. After serving as the family’s base for many generations, the current owners of the bungalow have renovated and opened it as a boutique hotel in the hope of sharing the legacy of the villa with travelers from all walks of life.
Experience Overview
Enter the halls of this beautifully designed 100-year old manor where you will be greeted by your host for the evening. Begin with a locally inspired cocktail that is sure to set up your palette for the meal ahead as your host talks you through the history of the villa, its family and their origins in Jaffna. Make your way to the dinner table carefully placed to ensure you have a lovely view of the garden while you enjoy your meal. You will be served an assortment of small edibles made out of various pulses such as lentils, called wadeys which are accompanied with two types of coconut sambals. Afterwards, cleanse your taste buds with a richly-flavored broth of Mulligatawny. Then prepare yourself for a feast as the main meal consisting of a variety of meats and vegetable curries arrives. This includes Jaffna crab curry, prawn, okra, paneer, eggplant and pork, all complemented with rice and pittu. Finish this grand meal with some traditional northern desserts with a modern twist.
