Tea, Treks and Tranquillity
BackThis 4-night stay at Amba Estate, a guesthouse set on an organic farm near Ella, is one of our Elevated Experiences – multi-day adventures that take you away from the tourist trail and give you a genuinely unique experience of Sri Lanka. Tea, Treks and Tranquillity does exactly what it says on the tin: go on scenic hikes to waterfalls and spectacular viewpoints; try your hand at plucking and rolling tea; visit an old tea factory; picnic by natural pools; explore the farm which boasts an abundance of spices, fruits and vegetables, and take time to simply relax and unwind in this enchanting setting.
Experience Overview
Your first day is nice and leisurely. Arrive in the late morning, settle in and then enjoy a gentle stroll to an idyllic natural pool, tea fields flanking you on both sides as you go. While away some time here with a picnic lunch. En route back to Amba Estate, visit the old on-site tea factory. Day two has you up early and out in the fields picking tea leaves with the locals, before a late breakfast and a trek to Ella Rock, Ella’s most revered viewpoint. The trail from Amba Estate keeps you away from the crowds and will take around four hours there and back, including breaks. Have a picnic lunch somewhere scenic along the way, or head to one of the restaurants in Ella town before grabbing a tuk tuk back to Amba Estate. In the late afternoon, you might like to do the teaology session – sample a variety of Amba’s artisan teas and learn how best to match each one with food. If you have the energy for another early start, we recommend heading to Eagle Rock for sunrise this morning. It is an easy hike that you can do alone, and the views are sensational. Spend the rest of the day on the farm: watch tea being hand-rolled; learn how to make jackfruit curry; see the various sustainability initiatives at Amba, and explore the farm with a guide. Day four can be spent in one of three ways, depending on your mood. If you feel like being active, explore a cave system and remote waterfall with guides – but be aware that this experience has risks, and you will need to assess the risks yourself before starting. Another option is to explore the local village on foot or by bike and see how a variety of local delicacies and handicrafts are made. The last option is a complete day at leisure, for reading, exploring the estate under your own steam, or perhaps yoga and meditation practice.
