Trek Taylor’s tea hills
BackExplore some of Sri Lanka’s most historic and scenic tea estates during this two-night walking experience in the Kandyan foothills, including Loolecondera, the island’s first commercial tea plantation which was created by James Taylor in the mid-19th century.
Experience Overview
This trekking adventure starts in Hanthana at the Ceylon Tea Museum, once a working tea factory, the perfect place to get you in the right frame of mind for the next two days. Following a tour of the museum with your guide, head out into the Kandyan foothills – the first day’s hike is from Hanthana to Galaha, 13km in total with an uphill elevation gain of 413m and a downhill elevation gain of 352m. It will take around 3-4 hours in total. You can then either choose to add on an additional trek of 6.5km from Galaha to Deltota, which has an uphill elevation gain of 295m and a downhill elevation gain of 124m, or take a car transfer from Galaha straight to your hotel. Your accommodation for both nights is Taylor’s Hill, a colonial tea bungalow with extensive gardens. The second day takes you from Taylor’s Hill to Loolecondera, James Taylor’s estate, a 9km trek with an uphill elevation gain of 520m and with a downhill elevation gain of 380m. You will have time to explore Taylor’s estate and admire the spectacular views from his ‘seat’ before returning to Taylor’s Hill by tuk tuk and spending the rest of the day at leisure. Depart after breakfast the next day.
