For a romantic escape or get-together with a group of friends, The River House is the perfect choice. Enveloped within seven acres of tropical gardens beside the broad Madhu Ganga River, close to the town of Balapitiya, its secluded setting, down a little unmarked road means that you have room to breathe and fully dissolve into the peaceful surroundings. The second of renowned fashion and lifestyle guru Anilana’s beautiful group of properties, The River House is South Asian in style and even more exquisite and sophisticated that its sister property Taprobana – space is an added luxury while bubbling jacuzzis, slate plunge pools and enormous bathrooms give it added exclusivity.
The River House consists of a main villa with four beautiful suites, a lounge and dining terrace as well as a further villa lower down the hillside beside the river which houses a fifth very private suite. Since the land is so generously sized, Anilana made each of the suites unusually large and added grand design features such as high vaulted ceilings, highly polished cement floors and wrap-around verandahs while making innovative use of endemic Sri Lankan wood, aged stone and antique furniture to seamlessly blend contemporary comfort with the elegance of a bygone era. Beautiful Indian bedspreads, tapestries, carpets and drapes in vivid colours enhance the clean white walls.
A beautiful infinity swimming pool in the garden edged by a little sun pagoda is the ideal place to relax and unwind whilst taking in the beautiful river and woodland views over breakfast or lunch. The tropical garden is teeming with wildlife enabling you to walk around and explore while an early morning boat ride up the magical Madhu Ganga is highly recommended. Indulge in fine cuisine, relax in tranquil surroundings and allow yourself to be expertly pampered in paradise.

Cuisine
You will probably be as hard pressed to decide upon which beautiful location you would like to dine – the lounge, pool pavilion, your own room or the dining area – as you will of what to choose from the deliciously varied menu. Emphasis is definitely on genuine Sri Lankan cuisine – the produce and spices found on the island – although the menu also includes some flavourful Indian and Thai-inspired dishes. The service at River House is always well-presented, discreet and friendly. Days usually start with a pot of tea delivered to your door while breakfast (which is included) is offered on a scale from the ‘Healthiest’ (fruit platter) to the ‘Not so Healthy’ (full English) leaving you the option to choose. All come with hot toast and homemade preserves, the fruit or vegetable juice of your choice and tea or coffee. If ordered the night before, a typical Sri Lankan breakfast of curries, sambols and hoppers (vermicelli-like rice noodles) may also be tried. Lunches are typically light – fantastic Oriental and Western salads, sandwiches and pastas are offered on a snack menu while dinner is a much more celebrated occasion with low lighting and relaxing music – notice how the tablecloths and smart uniforms of the staff transform from white to black by evening. The dinner menu consists of vibrant starters and beautifully-presented mains that feature a lot of fresh seafood. The traditional nine-dish Sri Lankan rice and curry is a very popular (and filling) choice. Desserts are typically fresh, fruity and indulgent! A wide selection of wines is available as are spirits, soft drinks and juices. Order yourself an iced cocktail by nightfall from your beautiful room verandah and listen to the sounds of birdcall and watch as the blush of colour vanishes from the sky.
