From the moment you step along the overwater walkway at the entrance of Sundara by Mosvold, you slip into a haze of beauty, sunshine and serenity. This beach villa is set on the shores of a quiet beach in Balapitiya along Sri Lanka’s south-west coast, just an hour north of Galle and two hours from Colombo’s international airport, a perfect base for anyone looking to balance peace and quiet with a range of things to do. Sundara has an exceptional design: the buildings are reminiscent of Geoffrey Bawa’s creations, with traditional Sri Lankan features and a blending indoor and outdoor space, whilst the interiors are an inspired mix of intricate wooden carvings, monochrome décor and plush furnishings. The main villa has four rooms – the two sea-view rooms on the top floor can be taken together, ideal for families. There is also a two-room walauwa with its own private pool hidden away in a concealed corner of the gardens. Two separate beach villas sit at the back of the garden by the bottom of the enormous swimming pool, just steps away from the ocean, perfect for couples. The villa can be booked as a whole or by the room.

Rooms

Sundara by Mosvold has eight rooms in total – four in the main house, two by the ocean and two in a private walauwa set away from the rest of the villa. All rooms have a monochrome theme, brightened by richly coloured furnishings, spacious bathrooms with quirky design features and ornate décor. Artisan teas are available in the rooms, whilst the bathrooms boast luxurious Spa Ceylon products.

Main House

The top-floor rooms in the main house are the Master Bedroom and a twin, linked by a large sitting area. These rooms can be taken together by families. Both rooms have a balcony to make the most of the beautiful garden and sea views, and the Master Bedroom is the most spacious room in the villa and has the addition of a bathtub in the bathroom. The groundfloor rooms are secluded and look out to the garden.

Beach Villas

Set at the bottom of the extensive garden just moments from the ocean, these two separate villas are very private. Their slightly smaller size is made up for by interesting additional features, such as the concealed open-air shower.

Pool Villa

Despite being set back from the beach, this is our favourite room. This two-bedroom pavilion is booked by one party at a time, guaranteeing total privacy, and opens out to its own 10m pool, flanked by tropical flowers. The well-furnished veranda is a lovely place to relax during the heat of the day.
