Trip Summary
1 - 2
Spend your first night in a picturesque rural setting that will give you an insight into Sri Lanka’s coconut culture. Horathapola Estate is a colonial property that sits on the edge of a coconut plantation where other endemic spices also grow. You can explore the estate by bullock cart with a guide from the hotel. You can also take a traditional cooking class to see how coconut is used in authentic local dishes. King coconut palms are a staple sight wherever you are in Sri Lanka.
2 - 4
Your private chauffeur-guide will transport you to the Cultural Triangle for two days exploring Sri Lanka’s most iconic heritage attractions. From the 5th-century fortress-palace atop Sigiriya Rock to the expansive ruins and ancient Bo tree at Anuradhapura, these historic hotspots are sure to inspire awe. Other notable visits include the medieval citadel of Polonnaruwa and 2,000-year-old Dambulla Cave Temple. If you also want a taste of Sri Lanka’s exotic wildlife, take a jeep drive through the elephant-filled Minneriya National Park.
4 - 6
Your journey now takes you to Kandy, one of Sri Lanka’s largest cities. Kandy is the Gateway to the Hill Country and, as Sri Lanka’s last royal capital, a cornerstone of the island’s Buddhist culture. Don’t miss the Temple of the Tooth where a centuries-old tooth relic is enshrined in a golden casket. Also worth adding to your itinerary is the Three Temple Loop for an insight into ancient religious art. If the city threatens to become overwhelming, retreat to the peaceful green spaces. Alternatively, throw yourself into the hustle and bustle on a tantalizing street food tour.
6 - 8
From Kandy, head into the heart of the Hill Country for a two-night stay in a traditional tea planter’s bungalow. This renovated 200-year-old property is one of the most luxurious holiday accommodation options in Sri Lanka. During your stay, learn all about Sri Lanka’s renowned tea heritage on a tour of a tea estate and factory with a resident planter. You can also enjoy spectacular hikes, bike rides, or viewpoint picnics during your stay in these sensational surroundings.
8 - 10
To end your trip, drive or fly down to Galle, a popular tourist destination on the south-west coast. In fact, Galle has been an attractive travel destination for centuries and was a key base for the European colonial powers during the latter half of the last millennium. The UNESCO-recognized 17th-century fort here is the setting for your stay, so the incredible architecture, artisan shops, and diverse eateries are just a stone’s throw from your hotel. Outside of the city are cinnamon plantations, special tea estates, and glorious tropical beaches where you can soak up some sunshine or experiment with exhilarating water-sports.
