This little-known part of the country is stunning, rural and varied. Head to Kalpitiya, a quiet coastal town which is a popular spot for kitesurfing, or those seeking a secluded beach escape. The more adventurous at heart should go inland and explore Sri Lanka’s rural north-west wilderness – the area is renowned for its picturesque lagoons and ancient tanks that were constructed during the Anuradhapura period almost 2,000 years ago, and Wilpattu National Park, the oldest wildlife park in the island and also one of the most beautiful. From here you can also explore the fascinating ruins of Anuradhapura, the first kingdom of Sri Lanka.
