Hotels in Sigiriya
BackSigiriya, located in the heart of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, was once upon a time a prince’s refuge, where he hid in fear of his brother’s vengeance. Kasyapa, who killed their father in an appalling murder, was forced to flee and decided that the summit of Sigiriya was the safest botlhole. Seven years later, his expansive fortress-palace was finished, complete with complex irrigation systems, pools and water fountains and extensive defences at the foot of the rock. Climb to the top of Sigiriya Rock and see the incredible ruins of this once majestic structure and marvel at the astonishing views across the plains – keep an eye out along the way for the famous frescoes in the caves which lie mid-way up the rock.
Both of our recommended hotels in Sigiriya have a connection with the rock fortress as they are built on waterways which mimic the pools and fountains which once ran through the fortress-palace, as well as the waterways which acted as defences against the prince’s enemies. Jetwing Vil Uyana has long been one of our favourite hotels in Sigiriya, whilst Water Garden is a recent addition which also offers luxurious accommodation is beautiful and peaceful surroundings.
Sigiriya Hotels
Water Garden includes 30 exquisitely designed villas that have been positioned in an equally elaborate setting. The property does not compromise on superior comforts even though it has placed much importance in the inclusion of its natural landscape. Settle into the lap of luxury.
