One of Sri Lanka’s most famous cities and once its main trading port, Galle is unarguably one of the island’s most enchanting spots, and has been a popular haunt for tourists for many years. Culturally and historically rich, and a particularly good example of how the European colonial powers impacted on Sri Lanka, Galle Fort is now a UNESCO Heritage Site which boasts many old buildings and is a unique multicultural microcosm within the island. Wander down the delightful narrow streets and soak up its old-world charm and peaceful atmosphere whilst exploring the historical buildings, shops and restaurants which line the paths. The fort, lighthouse and the 17^th century Dutch Reformed Church are just some of the sights to take in.

Galle covers a vast area, from the fort itself to the small towns along the Galle Coast such as the lively Unawatuna, tranquil Thalpe and the inland area around Koggala Lake. Hotels in Galle therefore range from old colonial relics within the fort itself, most notably the majestic Amangalla, to contemporary properties such as Tri Lanka and the spectacular Kahanda Kanda in Koggala and tranquil beachfront hotels including The Frangipani Tree, one of our favourites.
