Located 8km south of Galle in Thalpe, Apa Villas is the brainchild of Insight Guides publisher Hans Hoefer. Three distinctive ocean-view villas (totalling seven spacious suites), tastefully converted to exude a combination of colonial and modern styles, look out onto the grassy garden enveloped in sea breeze and cerulean infinity pool which seems to merge with the Indian Ocean – a sight so stupendously beautiful that it made the cover of Conde Nast Traveller magazine in July 2004. The expansive suites feature open-air bathrooms with striking décor, such as Turkish tiles and sunken baths. Built on an idyllic beach stretch, Apa Villas is the perfect place to shut out the world and leave your day-to-day stress behind.
The seven suites are named Cinnamon, Cardamon and Saffron, and only one of these does not have sea, pool and front garden views. With high ceilings allowing for optimal air circulation, the suites are cool and comfortable, furnished with large concrete-based double beds under thick mattresses. Dressing tables, lounge furniture and en-suite bathrooms add to the luxurious, minimalistic feel.
You may rent an individual suite, an entire villa or the whole property. Cardamom and Saffron comprise 2 suites each, whilst Cinnamon includes 3 interconnecting suites, ideal for families. Each villa sleeps 4-6 adults with extra beds available for children.

Cuisine
For breakfast, you can choose between Western or Sri Lankan dishes, including buffalo milk curd with treacle if ordered early. Whilst there is a 12-seat dining table, most guests prefer the option of private dining on their verandas. Sip on early evening cocktails atop the pool deck, or enjoy a light lunch there. Since there are no set meal times, guests have the freedom to live as they would at home. Chefs will discuss your preferences for the day’s menu where you can sample seafood straight from the ocean. Make sure you also indulge in their sinful desserts or sample the delectable high tea. Along with soft drinks and fresh juices, white local spirits are available too. Do bring your own wine though, in case it cannot be arranged for in advance. Complementary tea, coffee and mineral water are available throughout the day.
Just for the kids
Not only is the villa ideal for families with young children, the surrounding area is packed with wide and varied activities including snorkelling and rainforest hiking with a naturalist.
