Experiences in Nuwara Eliya
BackDubbed ‘Little England’ by the locals, this Tea Country town sits at the highest point of Sri Lanka and is one of the most famous places in the island’s hills. If you’re spending a few days in Nuwara Eliya, which was built by the British as a hill station, then enjoy walking through Horton Plains at sunrise, a round of golf, spotting birds and wildlife and taking in the views from World's End. You can also take a walk up into the cloud forest behind Nuwara Eliya town.
The Hakgala Botanical Gardens are also worth a visit. On the way, you can stop at colourful Hindu kovils and quaint strawberry farms. Soak up the colonial atmosphere of the town by wandering around the old British buildings such as the red-brick post office, or by visiting a local tea factory. Explore the town and browse the markets or try out the local eateries. One of our most unique experiences in Nuwara Eliya is a visit to a Sri Lanka-based specialty coffee house – Ceylon was once known for its coffee, not its tea. Coffee is now enjoying a revival in the island – see how it is grown, processed and roasted before enjoying a cup yourself.
