When you think of toasty log fires, hot water bottles and electric heaters, Sri Lanka doesn’t immediately come to mind, but at Stonyhurst in Nuwara Eliya – the island’s highest town set in the heart of the hill country – these features are all available to help keep you warm in the chilly nights. Situated at an elevation of over 6,000ft, the climate here shares more similarities with summertime Europe than with Asia: think hot sunny days and cool nights. Stonyhurst sits on a lush lawn fringed by neat borders of flowers and commands majestic views across the rolling hills and valleys. Its imposing granite façade contrasts with the warm, elegant interiors of this six-bedroom villa, which are furnished with cozy sofas and armchairs. A kitchen is available for guests to use, as well as a table tennis facility, and the garden boasts a croquet lawn. There are also four bicycles which can be used for exploring the back lanes of Nuwara Eliya. Stonyhurst is home to 6 cozy bedrooms all located on the upper floor and open on to garden or mountain views.

Cuisine
Sri Lankan cuisine is very much on the menu here – it encompasses many different dishes, allowing you to experience a complete range of flavors. You can also indulge in South Indian and traditional British fare too. Wake up to breakfasts of eggs, bacon and sausages with toast and fruits, or you could also opt for the Sri Lankan and interestingly, South Indian choices too. All food and beverages are priced at cost. Guests should give John, the caretaker, a cash float on arrival and he will shop and keep a tally of his daily purchases. You can also use the kitchen to prepare meals, and John will shop for anything you need. Bring your own alcohol (preferably from duty free), as the selection in local liquor shops is limited.
Just for the kids
This house is a family holiday home, and it’s been designed with children in mind. Kids’ books, DVDs and board games are available for entertainment, and children will love riding ponies at the racecourse, playing in Victoria Park and exploring the enclosed garden.
